What is the theme for the 2006 ‘Gospel For China’ Conference ?

Christian Life Quarterly will organize ‘Gospel For China’ conferences for two consecutive years ( 2006 in Chicago and 2007 in Hong Kong). The theme for both conferences is ‘Jesus Christ and Him Crucified’. What the theme stresses is to return to the core of our faith – the fullness of God’s Word. The theme also makes clear that what we believe in is the Christ who is crucified on the Cross for our sins, as revealed in the Bible. Once we turn our attention to the truth of ‘Jesus Christ and Him Crucified’, we will discover that this is the source of power for the spiritual revival of the churches and the growth of a disciple’s life – an abundant treasure beyond limit for life, grace, and truth that will never be exhausted.

The purposes of the 2006 Conference are first, to help bothers and sisters understand the truth of the Cross, and second, to allow the power of the Cross to enter our daily lives. The Conference is suitable for all who want to understand the truth of the Cross and to live out its power. It is also suitable for earnest seekers of Christian faith.

What is the program for the Conference? Will it be similar to the 2003 ‘Gospel For China’ Conference?

We will make improvements based on what we learned from the 2003 Conference. The program will be further diversified to meet the practical needs of the North American churches.

Dr. Don Carson, a well-known evangelical theologian, and several Chinese speakers will take up the Plenary Sessions. Dr. Carson will use the expository approach to explain the truth of the Cross in the Bible. Brothers Joseph Li and Bian Yun-Bo, and other senior preachers from Mainland China, will share the power of the Cross evidenced in their own lives and service. Through these two approaches, we believe that attendees will understand the truth of the Cross, and gain the power of the Cross.

Based on the current issues facing the churches, we will devise various special topics which will be tackled by invited speakers with practical experiences. Furthermore, we will invite several Mainland artists who have come to the Lord to testify for Him and praise Him with their songs and music.

In the 2003 Conference, there were 60 (one-third) of the 179 seekers who committed their lives to Jesus and became believers. This year’s Conference will again have evangelistic meetings and special programs designed for seekers. We hope that brothers and sisters will bring more seekers to the Conference this year, and we also pray that God will use this year’s evangelistic meetings to bring more seekers into knowing Jesus Christ.

A shocking and sad report noted that among children who grow up in churches, as high as 90% of them quit church after they enter college. A portion of them will be forever lost, never to return. Therefore, we will put special emphasis on English programs for various age groups in this Conference. In addition to children and teen programs, we have added a program specially designed for college students and young adults (age 19-30’s) that are born or raised as second generation Chinese in North America. Pastor Hugo Chen will once again lead the program design. Based on their needs, he will invite relevant speakers and representative youths to testify for the Lord. Since the Conference is held during the Christmas holidays, we hope that parents start praying for your children and encourage them to attend the conference. We pray that the children will meet Jesus and have their lives transformed at this year’s Conference.

What about the time and location of the Conference?

The Conference will start on the evening of December 26th, Tuesday, and end after lunch Saturday, December 30th, 2006. It will not affect the service of brothers and sisters at their churches the following Sunday. In the 2003 Conference, many pastors, elders, deacons, and co-workers rented vehicles and brought their brothers and sisters with them. It was inexpensive and it provided a time for fellowship and sharing during the drive. We pray that more churches and fellowships will attend as a group in this year’s Conference.

The location of the Conference is the same as that of 2003; at Crown Plaza (previously Holiday Inn) near the O’Hare airport, Chicago. The hotel has a convenient shuttle bus that runs between the airport and the hotel every 15 minutes.

Please explain how to register and pay the fees, etc.

Conference registration is now open. Please fill out the registration form and send it along with your check to Christian Life Quarterly. You can also register online.

In 2003, the number of registrants increased dramatically when it was close to the start of the meeting. The number of attendees jumped from an expected 1500 to 2500. As a result, the Conference co-workers faced a lot of pressures and challenges in arranging for lodging and meeting rooms. It was by God’s grace and sustaining that the Conference proceeded smoothly. We have now upgraded the registration process based on the 2003 experience.

This year we will request that the attendees register based on hotel room as the unit (exceptions granted only for special situations). To lower the lodging cost, the Conference will assign rooms and pay the hotel directly. Room cost each night is $54 (including tax). While asking attendees to register directly with the hotel would reduce our burden, it would increase the room cost and make it difficult for those attendees without a credit card or lacking English language proficiency. For the convenience of "all" attendees then, we have decided that the Conference pays the hotels in a Master Account, and in turn distributes the rooms to the attendees. Therefore, it is necessary that each attendee coordinate your own roommates and register together as a room unit. For example, a brother who wants to stay in a room for two needs to invite another brother to register together, indicating such on the registration. This new process will greatly simplify the work of the Conference registration group; and the Conference will proceed more efficiently.

Please do register early! We have already signed with Crown Plaza Hotel which holds 1500 guests. Beyond 1500, we will have to utilize Doubletree Hotel next door. The main conference room at Crown Plaza also holds 1500. If the total attendees exceed 2000, we plan to rent the Convention Center across the street, which would enhance the Conference programs in terms of capacity and equipage. The Convention Center is conveniently linked by skywalk to the hotels. However, we need to sign an agreement early if we do need to use the Convention Center. We sincerely hope that brothers and sisters will register early so as to enable us to have a better estimate of the total attendees in order to determine what facilities we must rent.

The registration fee per person is $20 if paid before September 10th, $30 before November 5th, and $40 before December 5th (Food and lodging costs are on the registration form).

In summary, please note the following for Conference registration:

  1. Please register as early as possible!
  2. Register as a room unit, find your own roommate(s).
  3. Group registration for 10 people or more will enjoy a 10% discount.
  4. The registration fee is halved for pastors, seminarians, retired missionaries, and all ministers. Retired missionaries and seminary students can apply for scholarship if needed.

How can we pray for this year’s Conference?

  1. Please pray for the conference speakers. Please pray that the Lord will use His servants’ messages of the Cross to build up brothers and sisters in the truth. Please pray that the Lord will sustain the speakers’ health and provide them with safe journeys (several will come from Asia). Please pray especially for the health of Dr. Carson and brothers Li and Bian.
  2. Please pray for the brothers/sisters and seekers who will attend this year’s conference. May the Lord prepare their hearts, so that they will meet Christ and have their faith renewed during the Conference. May the Lord also call and elect many of the young adults to come to the Conference and be touched by the love of God, so as to turn to the Lord.
  3. Please pray for the many Conference co-workers. Past conferences sponsored by CLPI have been smoothly completed because of the active participation of brothers and sisters from the 30 churches in Chicago which have formed the UCCC (United Chinese Churches of Chicago). From transportation, site management, hosting and ushering, and registration, the faithful service of many co-workers has won praises and thanks from out-of-town guests; they have been great testimonies for Christ. Please intercede for this year’s Conference co-workers, praying that many more will participate, and serve even more beautifully for the Lord.
  4. Please pray about the needed funding for the Conference. The collected registration fees are far short of covering the actual expenses. Ask that the Lord move the hearts of brothers and sisters who are able to donate for the various expenses, including the meeting place expenses, speakers’ honorarium, scholarships for needy seminarians, and aids to those who are in dire financial situations.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
We are only three months away from the year-end ‘Gospel For China’ Conference! All preparatory works are moving earnestly. I am happy to share with you a few interesting facts from the preparation:

  • Up to now, about 800 people have registered for the Conference. The number is higher than previous years at this time. Earlier registration by you eases our workload greatly as we can better plan and prepare. Praise the Lord!
  • Up to now, the oldest person to register is Rev. and Mrs. David S. Chen from California. Rev. Chen is 92 years old. He used to be a diehard follower of Communism, but the Lord miraculously saved him. Since attending seminary in 1947, Rev. Chen has served the Lord for almost 60 years!
  • Up to now, the oldest person to pray earnestly for Christian Life Quarterly and ‘Gospel for China’ conference is the 101 years old Victor Yuan in CA. In a letter to us on September 23, he said,” Three years ago, I prayed for the 2003 Gospel For China conference. I am now 101 years old. I am again praying for the 2006 Gospel For China conference.” Praise the Lord that He gave us such a praying worrier!
